This teen patient presented to our office with a large class II (commonly called an overbite), deep bite, and upper and lower misalignment. After thorough planning including with a 3D x-ray (low-dose CBCT) and 3D model analysis (Bolton analysis) we selected a treatment plan with braces and 3M™ Forsus™ appliance.
In this lateral photo before starting treatment you can see a large gap between the upper and lower front teeth (overjet). You can see that the green arrows don’t touch as they should in a regular bite.
After treatment the gap between the upper and lower front teeth is greatly reduced and the green arrows touch resulting in a normal class I bite.
Another common finding in patients with a large overjet is a deep bite. You can see in the before photos that the lower front teeth are barely visible. In the after photo the lower teeth are much more visible!
Alignment of the patient’s upper teeth is greatly improved!
Lower alignment has also improved dramatically!
Here’s a image for the specialists (called a structural superimposition): a common concern with non-surgical bite corrections is that they result in significant lower incisor tipping (also called flaring) that can result in gingival recession. You can see that the lower front tooth angulation was controlled with good technique. Of course, you can also see that the patient experienced significant growth during treatment (twice the amount estimated without treatment)!
